- Live The Data — Don’t Just Read It (TBD)
One of the most surprising lessons from running this affiliate marketing experiment has been discovering how different facts and interpretations can be.
Every morning, I check the data.
Landing page visitors.
Advertising costs.
Clicks.
Signups.
These numbers are facts.
Yet almost immediately, something else happens.
I begin interpreting them.
If the numbers look strong, I feel encouraged.
If they look weak, I feel disappointed.
The facts arrive first.
The feelings follow shortly afterwards.
For a long time, I assumed the two were closely connected.
The more experience I gained, the less certain I became.
A weak day sometimes turned out to be nothing more than a temporary fluctuation.
A strong day sometimes proved less significant than it initially appeared.
What changed was not the data.
What changed was my understanding of it.
And understanding often requires something that no dashboard can provide.
Time.
A single day’s results rarely tell the whole story.
The meaning of today’s data often becomes clearer tomorrow, next week, or even next month.
This is one reason beginners frequently struggle with analytics.
The challenge is not merely reading the numbers.
The challenge is learning to live with uncertainty while those numbers accumulate.
Looking back, I now see three distinct elements at work.
Facts.
Feelings.
Time.
The facts tell us what happened.
Our feelings tell us how we experienced it.
Time gradually reveals what it meant.
Learning the difference between these three things may be one of the most valuable skills any beginner can develop.
